Mat Kearney’s Mom Tried to Change His Name on Birth Records

Mat Kearney stopped by the Bobby Bones Show for a performance of "Good Thing Going On," to play some Bop It, and share some career updates.

While most fans know Kearney as an artist, he's also a dad to three girls. He joked that he's too old for the 2-year-old, noting he's a better, wiser human in a worse vessel than when they had their first child. He's loved watching his girls grow up, especially seeing how predictable it is with kids' ages. He was a middle child of 3 boys so he really relates to his middle child suggesting they're often the most well-adapted in families because you don't get the extreme of either parent. Speaking on his childhood, Kearney also shared that he thought his name was "Matt" for many years until he found some birth documents. He found a document with his birth memories on it and his mom had corrected his name from "Mat" to "Matt," but then when they went to look at his birth certificate it was spelled "Mat."

Talking about life on the road, Kearney shared the most misunderstood thing about road life. He says who you're with is such a big deal because you're together in close quarters, living on a bus. There's often 10 people on the bus at any given time spending most of your hours together. So if there is someone on the bus who doesn't fit, or their humor is weird, or they make people uncomfortable then it can get really awkward quickly. He often sleeps in as long as possible on the bus because it helps him be his "best self" at performing hours. His wife isn't a huge fan of him flying all the time for work, but Kearney loves flying. He thinks flying is one of the most relaxing things because he can just sit there and listen to music, the thought of having nothing to do is peaceful to him.

Kearney has written many songs, but most of those have never seen the light of day. He admitted he has a folder in his dropbox that's titled "Beautiful Orphans" and they just sit there waiting to be used. Most of the time it will take him two to three years to put out a new project, but his favorite time to write is the day a record comes out because all of the pressure is gone.
