Halloween is coming soon! What are the most common phobias?

According to the American Psychiatric Association, phobias are the most common psychiatric illness among women and the second most common for men. These phobias affect about 10 percent of adults each year.

These are the most common phobias in the U.S.:

  • Arachnaphobia: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are afraid of spiders.
  • Ophidiophobia: This is the fear of snakes.
  • Acrophobia: Don’t look down! Having a fear of heights is no joke, and it impacts 6 percent of people.
  • Aerophobia: This is the fear of flying.
  • Cynophobia: Fear of dogs. Who could be scared of puppies?!
  • Astraphobia: This is a fear of thunder and lightning. Thankfully, most people grow out of this.
  • Trypanophobia: This is a fear of needles and injections.
  • Social Phobia: This is also known as social anxiety disorder and for people who are uncomfortable socializing it can be extremely isolating and debilitating. (Very Well Mind)
