Daisy is our Pet of the Week!

November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month and HSSM has plenty of young at heart pets patiently waiting to be adopted. Sadly, senior pets are the last ones to be adopted and often have to wait at the shelter the longest. Puppies and kittens are cute, but adopting a senior animal can be a life-changing experience for you and that pet. Not only are older pets often easier to handle, but they are at least just as loyal and loving as the younger ones.

One misconception older animals suffer from is that they are in shelters because of their destructive or bad behavior. Though this is far from the truth, there are many reasons why an older pet would end up in a shelter. Many of these senior pets were once someone’s faithful companions. Changing home circumstances, financial restrictions, death, or relocation can have adverse effects on a pet’s life. These pets have much to offer and are often times already fully house trained. Younger pets can be adorable, but they also demand a lot of attention and can be destructive and very hard work to keep up with. Usually, an older pet can easily fit into your lifestyle and adapt well to a loving new home.

HSSM will be highlighting a senior pet each day this month. First up is Miss Daisy! This 8 year old Labrador/Retriever/Hound mix found her way to the shelter as a stray back in September and unfortunately no one came back for her. She's got the biggest voice and loves to give her opinion about everything, as she should. Daisy prefers the AC over being in the humidity, so she'd want to be a walking companion only in the fall/winter. This golden girl is waiting for someone to spend her golden years with in luxury. She's heartworm negative, already spayed and ready to cuddle up on the couch with you. Stop by the shelter Tuesday-Friday between 10am-5pm or Saturday from 10am-4pm to meet her for yourself.
