July 17 local headlines:

A Jones County couple is out of jail on their own recognizance after their arrests on aggravated animal cruelty charges. David and Mary Ellen Senne were charged after authorities seized nearly 100 dogs and cats from the couple's property on Lyons Ranch Road last week. At least 17 animals were found deceased.

You could be hearing gunfire around the Gulfport Seabee Base this morning, but it’s nothing to worry about.  The base is having a training exercise from 9-noon near the Broad Avenue entrance. 

The name of the winning bidder for clearing land in Jackson County for the I-10 connector road project will be announced at a Board meeting August 6th.  It calls for clearing the land near exit 50 for a five-lane road that will run parallel to the interstate and Highway 609. The price tag for the entire project is in the ballpark of 30 million dollars.

There's still time to get your winning Mega Millions ticket. The jackpot for today's drawing is up to 375-million-dollars, making it the tenth highest Mega Millions payout of all time. If someone wins and takes the cash option, they'll get a cool 226-million-dollars. Winning the jackpot is a long shot, about one in 302 million.

The Perseid [[ PUR-see-id ]] meteor shower begins today. Scientists say Earth will pass through the path of Comet Swift-Tuttle from July 17th to August 24th, with the shower's peak set to happen on August 12th. But, viewers can still catch meteor action before or after the peak time. The meteor shower can be seen best from the Northern Hemisphere and down to the mid-southern latitudes. Dust and debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle is what causes the Perseid meteor shower.
